Lucky Lindbergh Lands At Last
My news paper report from 1927
Yesterday
the first ever solo pilot Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic Ocean. It
took 33 and a half hour to complete and finally The Spirit of St Louis arrived
in front of 100,000 people in Paris. He took off from New York.
The plane
was called the Spirit of St Louis because of the sponsors who raised the money
for it to happen.
Charles
Lindbergh didn’t take safety gear, like a radio or a parachute. The take-off
was a big problem. It took four attempts to get in the air and finally he left
the ground and was on his way.
Lindbergh
was worldwide famous when reached Paris! 100,000 amazed people raised him onto
their shoulders. Lindbergh said “At times I thought I wasn’t a survivor I was
only ten feet above the ocean and one wave and I wouldn’t be here right now. Somehow
I managed to pull it up and continue the flight.”
Other people
had tried and failed 4 died, 2 were injured and 2 were missing.
The
publisher said,” Will anyone ever do anything bigger than that and maybe
someone will fly from England to Australia? Or a man land on the moon?”
